Founded in 2002, Calvin Capital is a trusted and leading funder of digital assets whose core mission is to accelerate the development of a more efficient and sustainable energy market.

Calvin Capital is owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), which is a leading global investment group that manages multiple alternative asset classes, including private equity, energy, infrastructure, real estate and credit, with strategic manager partnerships that manage hedge funds.

We are proud to be actively involved in the digital energy movement, and through supporting both UK and Australian energy companies with their smart metering programmes, we are integral to the ongoing transformation of the market.

In addition to smart metering, we also have a vast amount of knowledge and experience in arranging funding solutions for other digital assets and are currently involved in projects looking at emerging technologies including EV Charging and Battery Storage.

Bert Pijls

Chief Executive Officer

Bert assumed the CEO position at Calvin in 2017. Prior to joining Calvin he was CEO of Hellenic Bank Plc, one of the systemic banks in Cyprus, and before that he spent most of his work life in Financial Services, mainly at Citibank where his roles included Country Manager for the Czech Republic and CEO of Egg Banking Plc. In addition to his Financial Services experience, Bert spent some time in Energy where he successfully brought change into the sector in his role as MD Customer Service and Commercial for British Gas/Centrica. Bert holds a B.B.A. from Nijenrode University in the Netherlands as well as a Masters in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona, USA.

Jim Kuiper

Managing Director Australia

Jim leads the Calvin Capital business in Australia.  Prior to joining Calvin Capital, Jim led operations for Australia’s largest competitive metering deployment at AGL Energy, in addition to smart grid, sales and commercial roles at GE Energy.  Jim has a B.Com and LL.B from the University of New South Wales, and an MBA (with distinction) from INSEAD.

Sean Latus

Chief Financial Officer

Sean is responsible for managing the funding aspects of the business including shareholder capital and senior debt borrowing, investor relations and lender syndicate liaison.  He has over 17 years experience raising project finance and equity funding and has worked across multiple infrastructure sectors both in the UK and overseas.  Sean’s previous roles include Head of Investments at Costain Group plc, Senior Director at RBS Project and Infrastructure Finance, and Investment Director at John Laing.

Steven Gunther

Senior Investment Director

Steve Joined Calvin in September 2017 and is responsible for investment activities ensuring the successful management of key transactions through to financial close. Steve has over 15-years experience in ‘Project Finance’ with previous roles including: Vice President in Santander’s Project and Acquisition Finance department, Associate Director at RBS’ Project Finance team and Senior Consultant at PKF (now BDO)

George Donoghue

Chief Commercial Officer

George is responsible for leading Calvin’s Commercial strategy on International and UK growth, regulatory engagement and IT Infrastructure. Joining Calvin in October 2017, George has over 20 years’ experience in the energy and metering sector and has a strong passion for innovation and technology. George is leading the team to build our Energy Storage and EV Charging funding solutions. His previous roles include Head of Assets and Infrastructure at Npower, Head of Asset Strategy at British Gas and a Board Director of the Alternate HAN Company.

Paul Devlin

Business Development Director

Paul directs all business development activity including tender preparation and facilitating new product development. He is an MBA-qualified Chartered Electrical Engineer who has held key management positions in Manweb, Scottish Power and United Utilities. Paul’s key responsibilities within Calvin include developing business growth and marketing strategy whilst leading engagement and contract negotiation with potential new clients.

Sarah Blackburn

General Counsel

Sarah Blackburn is Calvin Capital's General Counsel and prior to joining Calvin Capital Sarah worked for over 10 years as a senior associate in the banking and finance department at Addleshaw Goddard LLP.  Sarah has extensive projects and finance experience across a wide variety of markets including project finance, acquisition finance and leveraged finance.  Sarah has also spent time in-house on secondment working for Barclays Capital and RBS.

Kay Houghton

Strategic Partnerships Director

Kay is focussed on two clear areas for Calvin, the development of the move into the international markets and to work alongside the UK Smart Metering Programme from a Government and Regulation perspective to drive the best policy and regulatory outcome for the metering portfolio. Kay has over 25 years’ utility experience (Electricity, Gas and Water), including expertise in operational, commercial, regulatory, and strategic management. Over the last 2 years, Kay has been appointed as a Director of Smart Meter Device Assurance Company Limited; was a founder and Chair of CMAP 2011.

Stuart Haughton

Operations Director

Stuart as Operations Director is responsible for operational management and performance of the business as well as ongoing customer relationship development. Stuart has over 20 years’ utility experience (Electricity and Gas) including 4 years in Industrial and Commercial metering with United Utilities. Stuart joined Calvin Capital in 2007 aiding the transition to independent company and its growth into the leading commercial meter asset provider in the United Kingdom, managing a portfolio of over 7 million meters.

David Gregson

Commercial Strategy Director

Dave is responsible for developing a clear commercial governance framework, including commercial strategy, quality, compliance, risk, HSE, technology, industry and regulation. He is MBA qualified, professionally qualified as a Civil Engineer and a Chartered Environmental Manager. Dave has over 30 years Utilities experience, joining Calvin at its inception in 2010 as Operations Director. His current role involves future proofing manufacturer strategy and contractual arrangements, developing and agreeing churn contracts, asset due diligence, monitoring of industry and regulatory matters and ensuring internal compliance.
