Chief Executive Officer
Bert was appointed to the post of Chief Executive of Calvin Capital in 2017 where he has responsibility for the overall strategic and commercial direction of the business which is a leading meter asset provider in Great Britain.
Together with the Calvin Capital management team, Bert recently led the company’s acquisition of Wigan-based Lowri Beck. The transaction, which is subject to certain conditions, aims to create an end-to-end market offering that will be available to all energy suppliers and new market entrants and comprises the installation, servicing, managing and funding of domestic meters. This will provide a platform for the future funding, deployment and management of a wider range of digital energy assets, including battery storage and EV charging infrastructure.
Prior to joining Calvin Capital, Bert Pijls was CEO of Hellenic Bank Plc, one of the largest banking and financial institutions in Cyprus. He was the first CEO of any bank to be approved under the European Single Supervisory Mechanism. During his time with Hellenic Bank, Bert also held the role of Chairman of Hellenic Alico Life Insurance, the life insurance company of Hellenic Group which was created through the strategic partnership of MetLife Alico and Hellenic Bank in 2000. Additionally, he was Chairman of Pancyprian Insurance, the general insurance company of Hellenic Group which became part of the business in 1999.
Bert has spent the majority of his working life in the financial services sector, much of this in various roles at Citigroup. These roles included CEO of Egg Banking Plc, one of the first UK online-only banks, and later Country Manager for the Czech Republic where he turned around the consumer franchise business to deliver high double-digit revenue growth by growing the card, investment and loan portfolios. He also spent 10 years working for Citigroup in Germany, Belgium and the US. In 1999, Bert took over as Executive Vice President, Strategic Planning, of the New York-based internet financial services start-up Moneyunion Inc.
In addition to his financial services experience, Bert has spent time in the energy sector as MD of Customer Service and Commercial for British Gas/Centrica.
Bert Pijls holds a bachelor’s degree from Nijenrode University in the Netherlands as well as a Masters in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona, USA.
